It is quite well known in the world of clinical trials that issues with patient recruitment and enrollment are the primary causes for delays in clinical trial timelines. We know that for each day a company goes beyond the planned deadline of a clinical trial, the company may lose hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. Therefore, it is not surprising that sponsors and CROs are looking to any and all means by which the rate of patient enrollment can be increased.
Based on the many studies our CRO managed in Hungary during the last 15 years, we can unambiguously state that Hungarian sites usually perform outstandingly well in patient enrollment. In most of our trials Hungary not only fulfilled but exceeded the target enrollment numbers. If enrollment is expressed relative to the population of the participating countries, Hungary is almost always among the most efficient recruiter countries. Nevertheless, even when recruitment is expressed only in pure numbers of enrolled patients, Hungary – despite its small population number with 9.9 million inhabitants – is still among the top performing countries.

One of the reasons for this efficiency is the high level of motivation of investigators in Hungary. The recruitment is supported by the availability of a centralized patient registry system and a full health insurance coverage.
